Tras el éxito alcanzado en su primera edición, la Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID) a través de su Programa para el Desarrollo de las PYME, la Cadena de la Miel de El Salvador y el Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (OIRSA) -con el apoyo del Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG)-, realizaron entre abril y junio de 2016 una nueva edición del Programa «Apicultura de Avanzada».
La iniciativa posibilitó capacitar a 180 productores y brindó asistencia técnica a 20 apicultores seleccionados,para promover el cumplimiento de los requerimientos del mercado internacional, así como también ofreció herramientas para afrontar la crisis del sector y aprovechar las oportunidades de mercados crecientes.
En 2014 se desarrolló con éxito el primer Programa Apicultores de Avanzada. Como resultado del programa se generó, a diciembre de 2015, un incremento en ventas de $510,575 dólares en PyMEs que participaron en la iniciativa. Asimismo, el MAG elaboró el Reglamento Técnico Salvadoreño RTS 65.03.01:14 sobre “Buenas Prácticas Apícolas en la producción de miel de abejas”, que se encuentra en proceso de aplicación a nivel nacional.
